The institution of Azhvancheri Thambrakkal, which legend traces to the time of Parasurama, is captured in detail in Rajan Chungath’s book 'Ithihasa Purushan: Azhvancheri Thamprakkal'.

'Thambrakkal' is a title that is believed to have been conferred on the scion of Azhvancherry Mana by Lord Parasurama who, as per legend, carved out Kerala reclaiming land from the sea, hurling his axe. It is believed that Azhvancherry Thambrakkal was placed by Parasurama at the top in the hierarchy of aristocrats among the eight Brahmin sub-groups who lived in the 32 settlements that Parasurama established to atone for his sins.

This book also has a biography of Brahmasree Azhavancherry Raman Valia Thambrakkal or AR Thambrakkal, who is the present Azhvancherry Thambrakkal. The grandeur of Azhvancherry Thambrakkal comes alive in the pages of the book mainly through articles written by the erstwhile Maharaja of Travancore Uthradam Thirunal Marthanda Varma, former Additional Chief Secretary Babu Paul, former Chief of Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) Hormis Tharakan, writers MG Sashibhooshan, Akavoor Narayanan, and Alankode Leelakrishnan.
