Karunakaran’s ‘First Love’
Express News Service
T’PURAM: Congress leader K Karunakaran is undoubtedly an all-time favourite with the cartoonists across Kerala.
But, on Tuesday, Karunakaran proved that he was not only an interesting muse but also a seasoned cartoonist himself.
Notwithstanding his ailing health, Karunakaran deftly caricatured Bishop Joseph Mar Thomas while inaugurating ‘Varayum Chiriyum’, the cartoon exhibition of ‘Kerala Kaumudi’ staff cartoonist T K Sujith. Karunakaran, who as a youngster shifted from homeland Kannur to Thrissur to learn cartooning, thanked the organisers of the event for giving him a venue to revive his cartooning. “Cartoon is an art form that will never fade.
Cartoonists are always revered by leaders and politicians. Nehru once even told cartoonist Shankar not to spare him in his cartoons,” said the veteran cartoonist-turned leader.
Besides being a comeback scene for Karunakaran the cartoonist, the exhibition itself was a first-of-its kind event. For, this was the first time that a Malayalam cartoon exhibition was uploaded online at the same time when it was inaugurated at VJT Hall on Tuesday. The exhibition is available at www.indulekha.com
As many as 150 political cartoons by Sujith were displayed at the exhibition. Ironically, Karunakaran happens to be the most recurring character in the cartoons that were published in ‘Kerala Kaumudi’ newspaper.
A noted cartoonist of the younger generation, Sujith has won many awards for his humorous and satiric cartoons. “I have been into this field for six years now. But, this is my first exhibition,” he said.
Education and Culture Minister M A Baby, who presided over the function, said that the Cultural Affairs Department was considering setting up an award in the name of eminent cartoonist Shankar to encourage young cartoonists.
‘Kerala Kaumudi’ director M.S. Ravi, managing editor Deepu Ravi, unit chief P P James and Indulekha.com editor Swapna Tom Mangatt were also present.
